Yosemite in Winter
Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, and for good reason. The park is home to some of the most stunning scenery in the country, including towering granite cliffs, giant sequoia trees, and cascading waterfalls. But while Yosemite is a great place to visit any time of year, it’s especially beautiful in the winter.
Winter in Yosemite is a time of peace and tranquility. The crowds have thinned out, and the park is blanketed in a fresh coat of snow. This makes it the perfect time to enjoy the park’s many outdoor activities, such as hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing.
If you’re looking for a winter wonderland, Yosemite is the place to be. Here are a few things you can do during your visit:
- Go hiking. There are many hiking trails in Yosemite that are open in the winter. Some of the most popular trails include the Mist Trail, which leads to Vernal Falls, and the John Muir Trail, which offers stunning views of Yosemite Valley.
- Visit Glacier Point. Glacier Point is one of the most popular viewpoints in Yosemite. In the winter, you can enjoy stunning views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls.
No matter what you choose to do, you’re sure to have a magical time in Yosemite National Park in the winter.
Here are some additional tips for planning your winter trip to Yosemite:
- Check the weather forecast before you go. Yosemite can get very cold in the winter, so be sure to dress appropriately.
- Pack snow chains. No matter how confident you are at driving, help is a long way away without chains. I bought chains at Oakhurst, essentially the last stop before entering the park from the south. Ensure you leave enough travel time for speeds as low as 20mph if conditions dictate.
- Pack snow gear. If you plan on doing any outdoor activities, be sure to pack snow boots, gloves, a hat, and a scarf.
- Book your accommodations in advance. Yosemite is a popular destination in the winter, so it’s best to book your accommodations in advance.
- We stayed inside the park at Yosemite West, and would strongly recommend if the budget allows.
- Be prepared for road closures. Some roads in Yosemite may be closed due to snow conditions. Be sure to check the road conditions before you go.
With a little planning, you can have a wonderful winter vacation in Yosemite National Park.
