PPG Proluxe (Sikkens)
Background
During my searches for a compatible wood filler, I kept turning up blank. Mainly because the wood filler product usually wouldn’t list what material it was made out of, and secondly because PPG don’t have any recommended products. PPG basically say to try out the product to ensure compatibility. Since I’m not made of money I grabbed two products to test, The first was ZAR Patch Wood Filler and the second was Minwax Color-changing Wood Filler. The ZAR Patch Wood filler is available in a number of colors and is latex based. The Minwax is a pink color but dries “neutral”, which was rather yellow. PPG recommend a wood filler that is polyurethane or acrylic based. From testing these two products, only the ZAR Patch Wood Filler was compatible. The Minwax Color-changing Wood Filler softened, but as the PPG Proluxe dried the Minwax also re-hardened.
Results
From these products I’d recommend the ZAR Patch Wood Filler. This was based on the available colors, which were more realistic. Also, the product remained hard after being coated with PPG Proluxe. So while this wasn’t an exhaustive list of product testing, I hope this provides someone else with some direction on a suitable product to use.
